Bayfield Hall - More
than one thousand attend first fairy fair
Britain's first conservation Fairy Fair attracted over one thousand
visitors - mostly children, when it ran yesterday at Bayfield Hall,
North Norfolk. "We were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm"
said co-ordinator Sarah Wise. "We ran out of fairy cakes by
two o clock and buttercups were the number one choice by children
making fairy gardens to take home. We thought their parents might
not want weeds, in the garden but they were very happy. Older people
were saying look ' I want one of those ' I remember them. I didn't
realise you could buy wildflowers. It was a a terrific response
- three times what we expected."
The Trust hopes to run more Fairy Fairs to bring children and families
into contact with nature in a fun way, once it has sufficient resources.
Prizes were given for best dressed fairies and elves, hundreds attended
storytelling and went on guided woodland walks and discovered some
natural secrets, while workshops making masks, wands, fairy boxes
and fairy and flower drawings were over-subscribed. The Mongolian
Yurt, sponsored by Calor Gas sheltered an organic fairy café
- which sold out of everything.

Felbrigg Hall 1-2 June - the
Yurt Hosts café and Gardens Are Planted
Dozens
of small boys and girls happily planted and decorated the mini-gardens
each featuring four species of wild flowers, supplied by Natural Surroundings
nursery, at the Yurt's first outing on 1 and 2 June. Despite the World
Cup and the Jubilee Celebrations, the Felbrigg (National Trust) Craft
Fair attracted thousands of visitors - and we got over twenty offers
of useful help from the many who dropped in to see us.
The Cromer WI and a dozen volunteers gave invaluable help to run the
organic fairy cafe, meet and greet visitors, and work with children
to prepare the gardens. Others explained the workings of a yurt to
admiring dads, and put the thing up and take it down again! Storytellers
and a Theatre Company also made use of the Yurt, which was paid for
by Calor Gas. See photo gallery.
More good news - we received a small grant from North Norfolk District
Council, and another from 'Awards For All', part of the National Lottery
-- for which thanks to all those gamblers.

'Add Magic' - Charlie Dimmock
Charlie Dimmock supports the Fairyland Trust, woodlands and creating
enchanted gardens. You may have read her column in the Mail on Sunday
promoting our work and getting readers to create their own Fairy Gardens.
"Add a touch of fairyland to woodlands" says Charlie, "bring them
to life for the little people", adding "that means children". "It's
all about teaching conservation but with the fun element, instead
of being so serious as it usually is" she says. Sarah Wise, Trust
Coordinator responds "We are delighted that Charlie is helping - she
has also agreed to back our own fairy garden kit project - all we
need now is a financial backer to give this wings". Anyone out there
own garden centres ? "Who knows - before long the bottom of your garden
may be home to much more than just a compost heap" says Charlie.

Thanks To Calor Gas
The New Year got off to a great start when Suzanne Weir from Calor
Gas called to say they would help the Trust by purchasing a great
big yurt for Fairy Fairs and other events. Now we need to fill it.
Please support our appeal. This year
we hope to participate in events around the country and host our own
event in Norfolk - so the yurt should see plenty of action.
September 2001
- As children, dressed in their fantastic costumes, arrived in the
beautiful grounds of Bayfiled Hall, they were led to a magical tent
where they were sprinkled with sparkles and fairy dust ready for the
procession. The Jenny Nettles band then led them up to a collection
of yurts on the lawn where they were told a fairy tale about the beauty
and magic of nature. The band played on and two special guests Holly
and Rachel who were 1st and 2nd prize winners in our ideas competition,
were given their certificates. A delicious barbeque was served courtesy
of Calor Gas and the adults quaffed champagne kindly donated by a
supporter.
The moon rose over the valley and swans drifted by on the lake. For
a moment we were all in Fairyland. Later on we all danced the night
to a great 70s disco thanks to Peter Owen Jones. Everyone seemed to
enjoy themselves and left happily clutching their unique Fairyland
trust wands.
