This pub first appeared in local directories in 1874 as the East Cliff Hotel. A substantial refit in the 1970's has left the pub unrecognizable from its hotel days. The pillar in the middle of the long bar marks the extent of the old interior which consisted of two bars. The saloon/lounge bar was extended into a toilet block while the lounge annex issued from the acquisition of the shop next door. The pub had a further refit in the mid 90s.

This handsome mock-Tudor pub was built by Russell's brewery of Gravesend in 1926. When built the area was mainly fields and a view of the seas could be seen, which is now sadly obscured by the houses which have been built since. The present day 'Charles' has a sumptuous open lounge with discreet seated alcoves. A garden houses a boules pitch.

The earliest mention of this classic flint built pub was in 1733. What kind of trade the inn did in its infancy is hard to fathom as it nestled in comparative seclusion. This changed in the 19th century when it got a reputation as an excursion pub, when horse brake parties sought out the pub's tea rooms. The pub has kept its rustic quality despite considerable alterations over the years. The Whitbread Beefeater restaurant and bar was added in 1975 with it being further extended in the mid 80s. Sold to Green King, who have turned it into a Hungry Horse outlet.
