First as a knapped flint farmhouse in open meadows, and when in about 1830 the town became to encroach on the area, it was acquired by James Newlove to become his Dane House Academy for Boys. Cobb's brewery acquired the freehold of the property from Newlove after his family's discovery of the nearby Shell Grotto. This new acquisition was perfectly positioned to service the procession of visitors to the mysterious Grotto. The pub was briefly known as the Freemason's Tavern, but by 1900 was once again trading under its inaugural name. |

Found up a tiny lane between the closed Benjamin Beale pub and Thanet Matchroom snooker hall, it has few concessions to modernity. It issued from a combination of two fisherman cottages built about 1680 which stood right on the water's edge, it was known as the Waterman's Arms and later the Aurora Boralis. Its present title derives from an American merchant ship which ran aground off North Foreland in 1857. It is said that as the crew were put up at the Belle (then closed) the management decided to reopen the pub will a topical name. |

 WAVERLEY High Street Margate Kent CT9 1DS 01843 298803 APH Greene King IPA (H), Greene King Abbot (H) Originally called the Kings Head, this inn tucked away in a recess is surprisingly spacious inside. It was described in 1893 by its proprietor, Thomas Pearce as the 'oldest family hotel in Margate' and certainly the section of the pub fronting the High Street dates to at least 1755. It soon established itself as a accredited town house holding auctions sales and providing for the gentry who frequented the bathing rooms which ran from the pub to the harbour. Like the pub these had rear access on to the beach via wooden steps, from where house-drawn bathing machines would convey clients the sea. The pub was extended after the 1808 storm destroyed much of the lower High Street and a grant allowed a new promenade to be built at the rear. The pub was initially extended side ones, then within 10 years a rear hotel annexe with frontage on the new promenade (Marine Drive) was built. The new pub name, given it by Thorley Taverns after their purchase of the place in the mid-90s, celebrates the only sea-going paddle streamer in service, which regularly visits Margate |
