Shepherd Neame Master Brew Bitter (H) Spitfire (H)
This small pub built in 1880 has been extended over the years and most recently has been refurbished and fashioned as a sports bar. In 1898 the pub's new landlord was so inspired by the coronation of Edward VIII that he christened the pub the Alexandra Arms, after the King's wife Princess Alexandra. As the royal family has copyright to blazon, the sign board artist was only allowed a likeness. This likeness had a central motif depicting a blazoned ass, which in heraldry means patience. It is speculative but this is where the pub gets its present name from as some wag called it the 'blazoned donkey', which got shortened to the 'blazing donkey' and even 'the blazer'.
