The inn is thought to owe its name to its central position on the Isle of Thanet as this would have been where ancient cartographers placed their "star". Whether this is true or not, the story has remained, as has the legend of the convivial evening spent here, in 1825, by the church wardens and choir of St Peter's church who came to dine here whilst beating the bounds of the parish. This was the first time the custom had been carried out since before the Napoleonic Wars and the evening became so boisterous that the choir boys were thrown into a nearby pond.
