Animated Clove Hitch

Clove hitches are commonly used to secure a rope to a piling, spar, rail or mooring post. It has the advantage of being adjustable when tied. Unfortunately, this also means it can slip if the tension is released and reapplied especially when the load direction is variable. It should be used in non critical situations or where the tension can be applied at all times. For example, when a line runs from the bow of small boat to a piling and then to the stern of the boat where it is tightly secured. When intentionally applying a load to the spar a rolling hitch is a better option.

Clove Hitch (S.Kennedy) Tying Instructions
Wrap the running part of the rope around the spar once and then over itself. Tuck the free end of the rope under the crossover. An alternative method is to hold the rope in one hand and make two loops (or turns) in the rope with the other. Tuck the second loop under the first and drop the lot over the top of the piling. Pull to tighten.
