Animated Rolling Hitch

Rolling hitches are commonly used when securing a rope to a piling, spar, rail or mooring post and then applying a load. It is very simple to secure and release but the attention must be made to the direction the load is applied. It should be away from the running side of the knot.

This hitch is tied in a very simliar manner to the clove hitch. Wrap the rope around the spar once and then a second time. Cross the rope over itself and wrap it around the spar again. Tuck the free end of the rope under the crossover.
