The Internal Politics of Keoland

General Overview

Keoland is split into 15 major and 24 minor political areas, each ruled accordingly by a noble. Originally the whole of Keoland was split into areas ruled by 'Counts', known as 'Counties'. Through the centuries, however, those nobles further divided their lands into smaller components, as rewards to favoured subjects, or for simple financial reasons. In CY 239 the Northern Baronies were created by King Cearain II as a buffer zone against incursions from the Rushmoor.

The Land Reforms, decreed by King Tavish when the Lendskurt was formed in CY 351, were the next major change, forced by the new King's need to gain support from the nobles of the land. The Lendskurt is the court of the nobles of the land, sitting in Niole Dra, and is the real power behind Keoland. They generally support the King, but were the Lendskurt to stand against his wishes he would have no option but to agree, as he commands their loyalty with no power greater than that of favour.

Fortunately, the House of Skotti have, until now, been wise and popular Kings, and the nobles of the land supportive of the country and their King as a whole.

The next major change occurred in CY 457 when Tavish IV created, through the Lendskurt, the Southern Baronies in an attempt to deal with the threat from the Dreadwood in a similar fashion. This was more or less unsuccesful, as the Dreadwood has remained a battle zone ever since.

The most recent additions to the Keoish sovereign's remit are the Colnies. Minor properties abroad, mainly in Amedio and Hepmonaland, and the oceans in between, their owners, usually adventurers, trade independence for the protection of the Keoish flag (and, if they are lucky, its fleet). They pay high taxes on their produce, but little is known as to the fate of many of these outposts during hte Greyhawk Wars as matters more urgent at home have demanded the withdrawal of the Royal Fleet from faraway waters.
