National trust, English Heritage Holy Island is reached via a tidal causeway and is the birthplace of Christianity in this country. On Holy Island is Lindisfarne Castle, perched high on a rocky outcrop. the Castle was built in 1550 to protect the harbour from attack. Restored and converted into a family home in 1903 the contents include superb Flemish Furniture.

priory was founded by St Aidan in the 7th century to convert pagan Northumbria,
later followed by St Cuthbert and the Lindisfarne gospels.
