"It made me want to be on stage and go,
'I can do that! It's easy!'"

MY FIRST GIG

Name: Marie Du Santiago (of Kenickie)
Band: The Charlatans
Venue: Newcastle City Hall, 1992

"Strictly speaking, my first gig was The Krankies at Skegness Butlin's. There was music and dancing, so I suppose it was a gig! But my first rock gig was The Charlatans on the 'Between 10th and 11th' tour when I was 13. It was Lauren's 14th Birthday, and it was the first time I'd ever really met Emma out of our group, the first time we'd ever been out anywhere together and taken it to a social level rather than just a work-style chat. Lauren's dad drove us the wrong was up a one-way street on the way and she was really embarrassed!

It was fantastic! Obviously, having never been to a pop or rock experience before, I didn't know how loud it was going to be or quite how exciting - and how, even though it was all seated, everybody was going to run to the front and bash each other up!

'The Stairs' were supporting, and we had a right laugh because they were hilarious - their clothes were stupid! So that cheered us up to begin with, although I never heard of them before or since. I never paid much attention to the music scene, but I knew I liked The Charlatans. It was when 'Weirdo' had just come out and it was their big hit, so everybody went mental. It was really fantastic and it made me want to be in The Charlatans! It made me want to be on stage and go, 'I can do that! It's easy! I'll do it with you!'

I'd had a bit of a fight with my mum. She didn;t think I should go, because I was only 13. She didn't agree with of-late-night-style activities. She didn;t know I'd been going out for about a year and a half! So it was all a secret, and I thought it was dead exciting and dangerous. I might as well have been watching Led Zeppelin, or Ozzy Osbourne biting the heads off pigeons, that's how exciting and dangerous I thought it was!

But it was only The Charlatans, who I later realised aren't really that fantastic. They're quite good, they just aren't quite as awe-inspiring as I thought they were at the time. It was the bright lights, the snoke and the sheer volume that impressed me most. I was very much into the effect of the whole thing what they did rather than what they were actually singing, but I know they did all the ones off 'Some Friendly' that I liked.

I had the best time, and it made me want to be a proper rock star in the style of Joe Perry from Aerosmith! I don;t tihnk there's much metal about me, but there's a lot of the spirit of rock!"
