Serenaker Beagles & Pharaoh Hounds

Our History

My love of dogs & Beagles in particular all started in 1980 when I outgrew my pony & decided I wanted a dog instead!. It had to be big enough to have fun with, but small enough to fit easily into my parent’s house. Mum wanted a Beagle & Dad an Irish Setter, we visited a few homes who owned these breeds & decided that a Beagle would be less manic than the energetic Setter!. Yes we were naïve!.

Scooby Doo duly arrived just before Christmas 1980 & changed my life forever. Barclan Tempo was my first dog & show dog, although he was not the best specimen of the breed, we won well at local shows in both breed & Junior Handling & I was bitten by the bug!.

1985 saw the arrival of Bondlea Piper & although he never hit the heights of his famous brother Poet, he did me proud winning amongst other things BPIS at his first show South West Hound Club under Jayne Wilson-Stringer.

1986 saw the arrival of Samwella Luther at 13 months of age, a gift from his breeder Pam Williams. Luther was a dog in a million & despite the difficulties in winning with a T/W male, he won well for me & we gained our first ever CC at Bournemouth 1986. My affix Serenaker was granted to me the same year, so not a bad year for a mere novice in the breed. Luther became a champion in 1989 under respected breed judge Jean Westren, a truly great moment with my best pal.

I had long admired the Beagles of Eleanor & Frank Bothwell of Norcis fame, & I was lucky enough to spend some time with them “learning Beagles”. I had a bitch pup from them but she didn’t make the grade & so I waited. Norcis Cornriggs came along in 1991 & again I was campaigning a T/W dog!. He won well for me before an accident put paid to his show career just as he was reaching his prime. Norcis Elkie had arrived by this time, she had a fantastic pedigree & was sister to Murphy’s Law a favourite of mine. She produced my first homebred litter in 1992. Norcis Gen arrived in 1994 a daughter of the fabulous Foxy Lady & Murphy. She never hit the dizzy heights of the showring, but she proved her worth in the whelping box 10 fold. Norcis Miss Muffet arrived shortly after Gen & she won BPAOC at the BA champ show under Jean Westren in 1996, shortly before returning to her home kennel. Elkie’s litter to Rossgay Rambler produced Serenaker Kind of Magic, who went on to become the foundation bitch of the Cuthill’s Benroma kennel.

In 1997 we decided to add PBGV’s to the kennel having fallen in love with this mischievous breed at shows & after being asked to handle one at a couple of shows for Yvonne Dean & Claire Gutherless. Deanound Tonnere duly arrived & immediately took over. He won well throughout his puppy career & was RBPIS at the Hound Association of Scotland in 1998. He won us our first major award at Crufts 1998 where he won the RCC, & also won the RCC at Bath 1999, but never quite broke through. Tragically he died young, but not before siring a litter of 1 to Mike Gadsby & Gavin Robertson’s bitch Allumeuse. Obviously we had to have this puppy & Afterglow Causin’ A Storm arrived. He was shown with moderate success & managed to win a CC at Blackpool ’03 & a RCC at Blackpool ’05, before he went to live a life of luxury with his new family.

I had long admired Pharaoh Hound’s after spending some time at my local dog club with Sonny & Cher, litter brother & sister owned by Elaine Lush. 1999 saw us in the position to allow one to take over our home & we had pick dog from a litter bred by Antony Bongiovanni, Dexter or Ankors Blade Runner was by an American Import dog out of Tony’s BIS winning bitch. Dexter was Top PH Puppy dog 2000, joint Top winning PH Dog 2001 & won his title at Birmingham in 2002, later on that year he won the HOUND GROUP at Paignton, he also won the DCC at Crufts in 2003. In 2001 we had the chance to own Dexter’s sister Ankors Behutet, who at the time had 2CC’s. This was too god to miss & so we agreed to become joint owners with Tony. I was delighted to handle Rohan to her title at Birmingham 2001. She won the HOUND GROUP & RBIS at Bournemouth & was Top Pharaoh hound 2001. She was Top PH Bitch 2002 & 2003 & Top PH 2004, she is the current bitch record holder. Rohan was mated in 2005 & she produced our first litter of PH’s the same year.

Anyway back to the Beagles. Gen’s 1998 litter to Ch. Norcis Mouseltoff produced my first homebred & 2nd champion Serenaker Fatal Attraction (Frankie) & Gen's litter in 2000 to a young dog Fallowfield Douglas who had won well as a puppy, produced Serenaker Carousel. Douglas went on to become a champion & was he top Beagle stud for 3 consecutive years, Carrie-Ann was runner up Top Brood Bitch in 2006 only beaten by her grandmother Dilly. Carousel picked up a RCC & RBIS at the Beagle Club of Northern Ireland under Penny Jefferies & at the same show her daughter Charlie by Rossut Navigator won BPB her 2nd such award, Georgina Kemp having given her her 1st.

Devil Woman then went on to change the face of the kennel, whelped in 2003 she was the Top Beagle Puppy 2004, runner up Top Bitch 2005 & was TOP BEAGLE in the UK 2006. She won the CC & BOB at Crufts under respected breed judge Dianna Spavin & ended up group 3 under Robin Searle. To date Charlie has won 16 CC’s, 9 BOB’s, a group 2, 2 group 3’s & a group 4, she was twice runner up in the Pedigree Champion Stakes & was Beagle of the Year 2007 at the BA Winners competition.

Freya arrived in 2005 by Douglas out of Frankie she has won well wining her stud book number at the Beagle Club of NI under Yvonne Dean when Charlie & her did the 1,2 in Open Bitch.

Charlie whelped her first litter in August 2006 to Christine Lewis’ American import dog AmCh. Wilkeep Co’s Hocus Pocus at Fallowfield. We kept 3 of the pups here at the home kennel. At the same time Freya also whelped a litter to Hocus Pocus & this produced the T/W dog Serenaker Trial by Magic owned by the Cuthill’s, Vinnie went BPIS at the SBC ’07. Charlie’s son Serenaker Devil in Disguise has done us proud being the Top Beagle Puppy & the Top Puppy All Breeds 2007. Archie also has 4 CC’s, 1 group 2 & 2 group 4’s. He was the overall winner of the Dog World/Purina PUP OF THE YEAR competition 2007, & was 4th overall in the PetPlan Junior Stakes grand final 2007. We were also delighted to win Beagle Puppy of the Year at the BA winners competition under Marion Spavin, & he qualified for the finals of the JW Winners competition held at Crufts '08 where he was a very respectable runner-up.

2008 has seen a new Pharaoh face here at Serenaker. We were delighted when Dr Stephen Sipperly & Mr Dominic Carota of the famous Hallam Hall Pharaoh Hounds in the USA, allowed us co-ownership of one of their wonderful hounds. AmCh. Hallam's Busiris Ra Qena has a superb pedigree being by Ch,Am,Int,Nordic,Swedish,Finnish,Danish,Norwegian Ch Farao Anubis Ramses x Am.Int.PR.Ch.Kamaraj Qena Saqqara. Both Sire & Dam being closely bred through the old Twinley & Merymut lines. Sirus has both brains & beauty, after finishing his American title, he has been very successful in Lure Coursing, having won the titles Master Courser & Lure Courser Excellent. He was the top Lure coursing Pharaoh Hound in the USA 2007. We look forward to him entering the UK show ring in early May.

The Beagles started 2008 well too, Charlie had a litter of 6 pups to her grandfather Ch. Fallowfield Douglas, they are looking rather promising. Archie took BOB & Group 2 at Manchester & the RDCC at Crufts. He was also runner up in the Champion stakes at the HAS.
