Court Opening

New Courts Officially Opened by Judy MurrayWe had a wonderful Opening Day on Saturday 19th August 2006 in brilliant sunshine. About 40 children were on court with Judy along with 7 coaches from the club. They had an hour of drills and they worked harder than we have ever seen before! Judy was an inspiration to them all. They all got a signed picture of Andy. There were also over 100 adults there – guests, members, former members, parents and supporters. The official part of the day consisted of the Club President, Jane Russell, welcoming everyone onto the new courts and introducing Judy (as we all knew) as one of the best tennis coaches, one of the best players from Scotland, a commentator and of course mother to Jamie and Andy. Then I spoke a bit about the project virtually repeating the content of the article I submitted to the last edition of the Tennis Scotland magazine. All the funding partners were thanked for their support of the project. Judy then hit a few tennis balls over the net with a very large racket. That was the photo moment! Inside the clubhouse, Judy unveiled a plaque commemorating the day and cut the obligatory cake. The Club made Judy an Honorary Member and also Andy Wood for his huge contribution to the Project Management Team. Presentations were also made to Alan and Jan Hay for their contributions to the project and the club over many years. Judy spoke of some of her memories of the club especially captaining the team to victories in the Scottish Cup finals during the 1990s. She also recalled when she played in home matches Jamie and Andy were often there too and jumped at the chance to play on the old clay courts when they were empty. She added that having these new clay courts and the large number of coaches at the club should lead to more good young players emerging in the future. There followed demonstration matches involving several members of the ladies first team who are holders of the Scottish Cup and have won the cup 15 times in the last 20 years – Janet Henderson, Liana Park, Allison Wood, Alison and Fiona Reid. Sam Macneil (14), winner of the Club and East of Scotland Road to Wimbledon competition, played Scott Lister from Linlithgow whose grandfather is a past President of the club. Men’s captains Simon Pattison and Alan Russell also played. It was a great day for the Club and there were lots of pictures taken to capture the event.
