THE CRYPT
The base of the Tower
The base of society
Reaching back to the Ancient Spirit

The Crypt
As you approach the tower, you see the crypt: a confusion of wheels and chains, mirroring themselves and projecting into the infinite. Two figures inhabit this space: a tall inanimate oak figure of the yoked Ancient Spirit, and the animated highly decorated figure of an Egyptian monkey. The construction starts to rustle, creak and groan. Follows a seemingly chaotic whirl of wheels and chains and cogs. Did the monkey set it into motion?

The figure in the back represents the Ancient Spirit. The richly clad monkey, although apparently in charge, is as much a prisoner, having sold her freedom for temporary privileges.

The Egyptian reference has its origin in the Flight from Egypt, when Moses and his people fled slavery and oppression to construct a new civilisation, our European civilisation.

The Ancient Spirit. To see a sunset. To witness a birth. To enjoy rain as well as sun.

There is a feeling of elation and belonging. This we share with all our ancestors from the beginning of time. This spirit is an energy and a force which has always been controlled and chained by leaders to bring this power to them. Over the centuries different groups have tried to free the Ancient Spirit, but each revolution - like the pendulum - just changes the form of his shackles.

The Monkey

The building of the tower is made out of wood. Wood blackened by fire. There is a resilience in wood and nature which is very positive. The natural forms of timber have a life force and a beauty of their own, and their shapes are timeless. It makes the building look old, and it is to do with the process of ageing, of history, of death and decay, and of the gaps of contact from one generation to another.

Eyes stare at you from behind the boarded-up side panels.
Eyes of the persecuted. Eyes of the persecutors...

Take a walk round the back of the tower, and in contrast to the decay you find that this part of the building has been spared. Beautiful carved panels, with shapes and lines like ancient mysterious cave drawings. These panels represent the positive progress of science, the spirals of DNA, lines of observation and of construction.
