More and More People Are Switching From New Labour to the Liberal Democrats

The Liberal Democrats are gaining support from many disenchanted supporters of New Labour. In recent months there have been many long term Labour supporterschoosing to support the Liberal Democrats. Among the foremost of these is television personality Clare Rayner. An ex-nurse and passionate supporter of the NHS, Clare has now left Labour and fights with the Liberal Democrats for better health care.

Why Clare Rayner Switched From Labour to the Lib Dems

"I was a young nurse in British hospitals even before the NHS was born in 1948. I saw for myself the fear and misery illness caused families who lacked the money to pay doctors' bills. And that's why I've been a passionate supporter of the NHS ever since.

"Everybody should get every sort of health care they need when they need it. It's one of the main reasons that I've always supported the Labour party. But now New Labour are saying - okay if you get cancer and have to be looked after we'll pay for it. But if you have alzheimers or dementia - tough. What a way to reward those thousands of older people who've contributed so much to this country and were promised cradle to grave care. Oh it disgusts me!

"So I've decided to abandon New Labour and back the Liberal Democrats. They seem to be the only party which really cares about older people."

Lib Dems Believe That ...

there should be free personal care for older and disabled people.

Lib Dem MP Paul Burstow has presented thousands of signatures calling for free personal care to No 10 Downing Street. Many Labour supporters - such as former agony aunt Clare Rayner - are now backing the Lib Dems in disgust at the Labour Government's failure to provide free personal care.

In the recent General Election, most people said they supported the Lib Dem policy for free personal care for all older and disabled people who need it.

Why Don't You Join The Liberal Democrats?

Usually the first question everyone thinks of when they consider joining an association is "What will it cost me?" The answer is quite simple - you choose! Unlike the Labour Party and the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats don't rely on big business or trade unions for support. We rely on ordinary people like you. This means that when we decide our policy, we don't have to pander to anyone else's wishes and can make free decisions that will benefit ordinary people like you.

The Liberal Democrats may not yet have any Councillors within Middleton, but we are the second largest group on the Council with 21 elected representatives. Our support within Middleton is growing and whether they like it or not when the Lib Dems say something Labour have to listen.

During the election campaign many people commented to Marie as to how busy she has been over the past few years. Being involved with the Lib Dems is like any other hobby or interest. You only do it when you wish. If you want to be as active as Marie you can but it is not necessary.

Equally as common a question as "What will it cost?" is the question "What will you gain?" or put quite simply, "Why do we need you to join the Liberal Democrats?" Without the involovement of local people we would not be as efficient at supporting local communities. We rely on the views of everyone in making our decisions. The policy of the Liberal Democrats in Middleton is decided by the members of the party in Middleton. We are not dictated to by anyone outside our area. If something is good for the area, we support it - if we believe it will damage our area, we oppose it. Even on national issues such as health, education, policing, etc. the ordinary member can and does have their voice and opinion heard by the party leaders and have equal rights in voting for or against that policy.
