Geoff Tomlinsonfrom No.54Landscape Gardening at Sixty These past few weeks I've been making path. The path leads nowhere - or it may turn back From nowhere and I'm trying to decide Whether my life's been like that, a new track Through ancient undergrowth, an odd aside Like some mis-focus in a photograph. The path is for appearances. One day It may be fringed with flowers or maybe not. We've ample space already, more than most And most of my endeavours seem to rot Or blossom once and then give up the ghost For no known reason. Maybe that's the way With hopeful enterprises, ill thought out, And yet I'll no doubt potter till it's done Then hand it back to nature, unregretting. It wouldn't be so hard if it were fun But things look different when the sun is setting And you're not certain what it's all about. But still, I made a path, though it's unfinished And who, at sixty, can say more than that? Maybe the open end was the intention Or something more seemed missing when I sat Staring at all the weeds. And I should mention, Whatever's added, nothing's been diminished. |
