15th July 2001: Borreliosis
We are informed the ticks in
Northern Europe are particularly numerous this year. Since they can transmit
Borreliosis Burgdorferi members going there should try to prevent dogs or
themselves from acquiring them! The first signs of Borreliosis can be an
inflamed area, or / and fever (might not occur), or / and the dog feeling
poorly; signs like lameness, internal damage (organs, bones), or Arthritis
usually occur only when the disease is not treated. A German vet has stated
that the experts recommend treating a dog for a minimum of 3 weeks . Since
this disease does not occur in the UK our vets may not be aware of the
symptoms. If this disease is untreated it can harm a dog severely.

2001: EUROTUNNEL PET
TRAVEL SCHEME--REVISED ARRANGEMENTS
With effect from 28 February, Eurotunnel will be changing its operating
arrangement for the checking of domestic cats and dogs travelling under the
Pet Travel Scheme.
Until now passengers with pets have had the necessary checks carried out in
a booth adjacent to the British frontier controls. This was a temporary
arrangement to enable the company to master the complexities of the scheme
and it worked reasonably well. However it did have several drawbacks. In
particular, owners of "failed" pets had to suffer the inconvenience
of being
re-cycled out of the system.
With the agreement of the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food,
Eurotunnel has now moved its pet control point to a building situated before
check-in. This will not only avoid the need to re-cycle people out of the
system if their pets fail, it will also make it possible for pet owners to
check that their animals are compliant in advance of their date of travel to
the UK.
The new pet checking booth is to the right of the toll booths on the French
terminal. Pet owners should look for the signs on the gantries on the
approach road to the terminal.
