Museums

From 1987-1993 I was Exhibitions Officer at the Royal Engineers Museum and from 1994-2004 was Curator, King’s Regiment Museum. I also conceived and curated the exhibition Spirit of the Blitz about Liverpool during the Second World War at the Merseyside Maritime Museum.  This attracted just under 500,000 visitors during 2003-2004 and was the most successful history exhibition ever staged in Liverpool.

Teaching

I am a Research Associate at the Centre for First World War Studies at Birmingham University.  I teach courses on the First World War at Liverpool University in Southport starting 24 September and Liverpool starting 26 September 2007.

Battlefield Tours

I am a guide for Holts Tours and will be leading seven tours during 2007, including the Pals Battalions, Ypres, Vimy & the Somme, and War in the Desert.

Research and Books

Osprey have recently published my book on gas warfare during 1914-18, the first comprehensive short history of this topic.  I am currently working on a book on tunnelling at La Boisselle, which involves detailed research into 179th and 185th Tunnelling Companies, Royal Engineers.  If you are related to someone who served in either of these units I would be pleased to hear from you.  Related to this is remarkable story of ‘Sapper’ Dorothy Lawrence, a journalist who dressed as a soldier in order to get to the frontline in 1915.
