Playing Career
Simon started playing hockey at the age of 11 for his school (Lochinvar House
School). He continued to play at Mill Hill School and for fun at the University
of Surrey. On leaving University, Simon joined Potters Bar Hockey Club, where he
played in the 2nd XI as left half. During his last 2 years at the club, he
captained the 3rd XI, which contained a mix of colt and senior players.
When Simon and his family moved to Oxfordshire, he joined Chiltern Hockey
Club and played in their 2nd XI. He joined the Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire
Umpires Association and became a pool umpire.
On moving to Hitchin, Simon joined Blueharts Hockey Club as
initially a club
umpire for their Herefordshire Intermediate League side and than as a pool
umpire for the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Umpire's Association. Simon
remained in the pool for some 3 years, until he moved with his family to
Berkhamsted.
Simon was asked by Berkhamsted & Hemel Hempstead Club to become their
club umpire for their 2nd XI. After 2 seasons, Simon returned to playing and was a member of
Berkhamsted 3rd and 4th XI's. As his children wanted to play, Simon went to
help out on Sunday morning. From this initial start Simon went on to get his
coaching qualifications. With Simon's interest in coaching, he was asked
by the Ladies 2nd XI to coach the squad for a season. He then went on to coach
the men's 3rd XI for a season and then the 2nds for a season.
