THE SOLWAY FISHERY

present day

Solway Fishery of today is still a very traditional trout farm using large earthen ponds to rear Brown trout. The combination of low stocking densities and a natural environment ensures fully-finned, strong healthy fish. Yearling and Two-year-old Solway Brown
	   trout

We have our own hatchery and brood stock and ensure only the best qualities of condition, growth and colour are passed on from the mature fish. Our hatchery is fed from the burn, not, as in most cases, by a spring. natural changing water conditions of the burn (acidic spates-silt levels-temperature) promotes very good resistance to harsh environments and helps our Brown trout to adapt and naturalize after stocking.

In the wild the Brown trout are quite a slow growing fish compared to other salmonids. At Solway we try to reproduce as natural an environment as possible. Withvery low stocking densities and some natural feeding in the earthen ponds as well as supplementary feeding by us it takes 2 to 3 years for our Browns to grow to around 12" We use a quality, low-pollution feed which has no added chemicals to pigment the flesh pink. All fish of 8"and over, are individually hand graded to ensure size and quality. Stockings are a natural mix of both sexes.

Brown trout available from fry to 3 year-old.
