Management Issues

A single computer can be used at any time by any child who requires the support of a word-processor, or the challenge of a particular piece of literacy software. It can be used by a group in the class while others work on paper, maybe with an activity rotated among the groups over a period of a week. It can also be used to demonstrate some concept to the whole class gathered round the screen for a short time. A computer suite requires very careful timetabling to be used effectively. Maybe each class could take it in turns to have a Literacy Hour in that room? On that occasion the children could have an ICT-rich session. The use of ICT in schools is increasingly becoming part of other subjects, encouraging the children to learn these subjects more effectively through the use of technology. The Literacy Hour is not the place to teach discrete ICT skills, but there are certainly many opportunities within it for ICT to contribute motivation and quality to children’s learning.
