Church Re-ordering : 3. The Diocesan Advisory Committee The DAC visited St. Chad's in October 2000 to look at the proposals. Below is the text of their letter following that visit. " Thank you for making the sub committee so welcome when it visited the church last month. The reordering of this church and the associated works is a major scheme which may need to be phased over a period of time. The creation of a new entrance lobby and suitable access for the disabled appears to be progressing well. The tarmac path to the large slab at the head of the steps needs to be carefully assessed to try and produce a gradient of 1 in 20 or 1 in 15 at the most. Having reached the head of the steps the problem remains of how to overcome the further two steps into the porch. Your architect seems to favour relaying the paving in the porch to create a slope to a single step to ease access. The Advisory Committee suggested extending the porch floor level outwards and adjusting the tarmac path to the new height. A suggestion was made that disabled access might be created through the South Porch. Members would like to see a ground plan of the building showing how disabled access is to be achieved and giving the gradients of the ramp. The plan should include details of parking provision for the disabled. The Committee was in favour of the proposed new entrance lobby but thought the glass doors should be higher to allow coffins to be carried . The doors should also have suitable motifs on the glass to meet current safety regulations. Members were in favour of creating a platform at the east end and agreed that the height should be at that of the second of the four steps and that it should extend to the first pillars in the nave as shown on the plan. It is essential that it should be constructed to a high standard with a sound substructure. It was suggested that the kneeling step should be made wider to make administration easier. |
Page 1 ... Page 2... Page 3 ...Page 4... Latest News Interactive Plan There was some concern about the proposal to have a movable altar which should have a strong presence and be longer than that shown on the plan. The Committee would also need to know where it would be located when not in use. The complete proposals should include designs of all new sanctuary furniture, altar rails and a sample of the platform floor covering and any other new items which are to introduced. Throughout the scheme the parish needs to be aware of the need for wheelchair access. It seems unlikely that the Local Authority and the Victorian Society would allow an extension to be built on to house the store and toilet facilities. The additional costs would be considerable. Members thought the most suitable scheme would be to screen off the west end of the north transept chapel. I understand that the store is to be used for ground maintenance equipment, which includes a petrol powered mower. The store should be of solid construction and fire proof. Members would appreciate an overall groundplan showing all aspects of the re-ordering. Early consultations should take place with the Local Authority, English Heritage and the Victorian Society. The parish should also compile the Statements of Significance and Need as outlined in the booklet "Making Changed to a Listed Church", copies of which have already been circulated. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require clarification on any of the points made in the is letter. I look forward to hearing from you in due course. Yours sincerely Mrs. D. B. Cartwright, DAC Secretary " |
