St. Chad's Gifting for 2007

St Chad's has long given 10% of the money received through the Stewardship Scheme, cash collections, income tax recovered, and appropriate donations, to a selection of charities, some suggested by members of the congregation.

You will (or perhaps you won't) be surprised to learn that 8% of charities receive over 90% of the country's total charitable giving. Some large charities have enough uncommitted money in reserve to keep them going for many years without further income. Meanwhile, many small charities doing equally valuable work often struggle to keep going.

With this in mind, the PCC's Community Engagement Committee this year favoured small charities where amounts such as £500 or £1,000 will make a real difference. It took into account the size (and proportion of annual expenditure) of each charity's free reserves (which indicate its relative need for donations). However, it also recognised the long-standing links between St Chad 's and some large charities; those have been included on the list despite being in less immediate need of our contribution
