Stewardship

Members of the Iona Community believe it is important to be accountable to one another for how they spend their money and their time. So once a year each regional group sits down and, over the course of an evening, every person there gives as accurate an account as they can of how they spend these two key resources, time and money.

It is a myth that the Church is flush with cash. St Chad's certainly isn't. Our shortfall last year was not as bad as the £20,000 predicted, in large part due to the awesome amount of money that was raised at the Auction of Promises: but the deficit still came in at over £15,000. Clearly we can't keep on doing this year on year.

What can we do about this? On a recent visit to see my Spiritual Director, a former chartered accountant, he put it another way: if every member of his Church gave an extra £3 each week this would solve all his stewardship problems overnight. It would work here as well. £3 isn't a huge sum. If you drink more than one bottle of wine a week would you really miss it?

If you respond to this suggestion I promise I wouldn't keep on going on about it each month, we wouldn't need to go through the pain barrier of another stewardship appeal and my Spiritual Director could give me some spiritual rather than financial advice for a change… It is a nice dream and I am going to keep on dreaming it. These are kind of dreams all Vicars have I am sure. The example of the Iona Community is a wonderful Christian witness – the belief that being a Christian affects the whole of our life.

Some facts and figures

The overall cost of running St Chad's last year was nearly £160,000. This included £88,764 for the parish share, (paid in full). The remaining amount, apart from the £10,000 for the church's charitable giving is our running costs. Significant elements include gas (£7,500), electric (£1,200) and insurance (£6,000).
