Final Curtain for Centre Stage

All good things come to an end, they say, and so it is with regret that I write these words. After more than 70 years the St Chad's Drama Group has finally disbanded. We have had dwindling audience figures for some years and could not meet the costs of producing the plays. I joined the group in 1990 and have had so much pleasure despite the hard work of rehearsing three plays a year for Centre Stage and usually three for Adel players too! We have done some wonderful plays such as The Millionairess; Lettice and Lovage; Arsenic and Old Lace; The Cherry Orchard; Time of My Life; The Norman Conquests; Number One; Lord Arthur Savile's Crime, and many, many more.

I have also made many friends over the years but, as will happen, people move away, and sadly two of our members, John Pemberton and John Anderson, died this year. John Pemberton was Chairman for many years and was such an integral part of the group. We lost the talents of John Anderson some years ago due to Parkinson's disease.

Members too have moved away: Anne Robinson to France, Paul and Sue Taylor to Pocklington, Trevor Hodgeson to own and run a pub. We were a small group to start with and always had to build and decorate sets even if we were in a play so there was a good deal of hard work but we enjoyed entertaining our regular audience very much.

A few of us still act regularly at Adel and I would urge any of our Centre Stage audience to go on the mailing list there and come up to see the plays at the Memorial Hall. You would receive a very warm welcome. You can do this by emailing adelplayers@btinternet.com or by contacting Mike or Ann Andrews on 2755585.

Finally I would like to say thank you to St Chad's for all the support you have given us over the years. I hope to keep contact with you, and who knows, Centre Stage may one day be revived.
