CWM ORTHIN SLATE QUARRY

MAP REFERENCE= SH 681459
WARNING.
This quarry is privately owned presently being untopped and as such should not be entered.

ENTRANCES= Three known of as follows

  1. Behind the ruins of the managers house, previously used by locals using a landrover to remove slate. This know has a road running over it used by the large tipper lorries and when last visited ( 1996) had partially collapsed. Further in past the collapse is a very shattered and dangerous area with much fallen rock. Should the tunnel collapse there would be no way out ???.

  2. At lake level hidden from all but direct view by the cutting. This entrance is also in danger of collapse as the first few yards run through the tip on the side of the hill, and much of the roof support material has decayed and rotted.
This level is the open and allows access to much of the mine at present.

  3. Above the lake level there is an obvious entrance which we have not visited and am unable to comment on.

VISITS

First visited in 1976 we entered the mine trough the level behind the house , on floor 2S.
and made our way through the quarry to end up on floor E by the flooded trucks.

Visits in recent times have shown a large fall in the area of the lake level behind the compressor building ( used during the 1980s) which prevented a revisit to areas first loooked at in the 1970s.
