Below are some photographs and silhouettes (not to scale) of the quarry species available to wildfowlers. All of these species have been shot on the marshes used by Spalding Wildfowlers, some appearing on returns more often than others. One of the most important aspects of wildfowling is making sure that when you shoot at a duck or goose, it is legal quarry. These pictures are a guide but the only way to be sure is to get out there and see them in all the different light situations that appear during the day. Remember, if in doubt DO

Large
dabbling duck with male having a bottle-green head. In flight, it flies
quickly with shallow wing beats. It has a deep quark which is either
a single note or several strung together.

Medium
sized dabbling duck with the male having a distinct chestnut head with
a golden forehead. In flight, it has fast wing beats and a very distinct
whistling whee-oo call.

A
dabbling duck that is of a slim build with a long neck and distinctive
tail. The male has a chocolate head with a white stripe down the back.
Very rarely makes a noise.

medium sized dabbling duck with a dull plumage. Usually flies in pairs
or mixes with other species. Has a high pitched quack.

very small dabbling duck with the male having a chestnut head and a
green eye stripe. A very agile duck that is renowned for its vertical
take-off abilities. Its voice is a whistling crick-crick.

medium goose with a brownish plumage. Has a white band a the base of
the bill and black barring on the underparts of the chest. Call is a
high pitched cackle.

patch. Flight is strong and fast with a lot at low level. Usually calls
with a loud honking.

The shooting of wildfowl on Christmas Day is
prohibited as is shooting on Sundays in some counties (or parts of counties).
In England and Wales these counties are Anglesey, Brecknock, Caernarvon, Carmarthen,
Cardigan, Cornwall, Denbigh, Devon, Doncaster, Glamorgan, Great Yarmouth County
Borough, Isle of Ely, Leeds County Borough, Merioneth, Norfolk, Pembroke,
Somerset, North and West Ridings of Yorkshire.
