Christchurch constituency profile

This was the constituency of the Liberal Democrat by-election winner Diana Maddock. However, Christchurch is natural Conservative country and Christopher Chope - a former Minister - was always the likely winner here. The constituency covers much more than the town of Christchurch itself. In area the largest part is a strip to the north west of the town including such centres as Hurn, Ferndown and Verwood on the northern boundary. The seat includes Bournemouth's International Airport and there are some defence-related industries based here. It is predominantly a retirement area. Over one third of the population were of retirement age in the 1991 census.
