New Forest West Constituency Labour Party selects Janice Hurne as their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate

Janice lives in Bournemouth and has been a local councillor on Bournemouth Borough Council and is currently a school governor at both Kinson Primary School and Kings High School in Bournemouth.

Janice was born in Kent and lived and worked in Essex until moving to Southampton in 1985 to take up a lecturing post at Southampton Institute, transferring after 2 years to lecture at Bournemouth University, commuting to and from Southampton to Bournemouth by train & bicycle until moving to Bournemouth in 1994.  Janice is a Maths Graduate with 10 years experience of working in the Computing Departments of the Civil Service before becoming a lecturer in Higher Education at Bournemouth University. She has a Master’s degree in Information Systems Development and Management and is a full professional member of the British Computer Society.

Janice has lived for 20 years in Hampshire and Dorset, and is married with a daughter who is a counsellor working with young people. In addition to being a member of the Fabian Society, the lecturer’s trade union NATFHE, and a member of the Co-operative Party she is a founding member of the “Bournemouth in Europe” campaigning group. She enjoys exploring the natural world on her doorstep, particularly by walking in the forest and on the coast, and flying her glider.

Janice was Labour's candidate at the last 2005 general election, when  Labour had an excellent result in the New Forest West constituency, producing one of the best Labour performances in the whole of the UK:

Despite the fact that around the country the vast majority of Labour candidates saw their percentage of the vote cut, we managed to add just over 1,100 to our vote & increase our share of the vote by 1.8%. Of the 3 major parties, we had the largest percentage increase, with the Liberal Democrat vote collapsing by almost 7%.

Labour has been making steady progress in replacing the Lib Dem’s as the only real alternative to the Tories in New Forest West. The following bar charts show that the last 2 general election results in this constituency have seen the Lib Dem percentage vote fall & the Labour percentage vote rise. This is even more remarkable given the fact that Labour has a government record to defend while the Lib Dem’s have no record to defend. We are now positioned right behind the Lib Dems having closed the percentage gap from 11.1 % in 2001 to just 2.4% in 2005. At the next election the Lib Dems cannot claim that New Forest West is “just a two horse race”.  

The Labour party's fundamental belief is that self-interest and the common good can work together. This is illustrated by our belief in the following principles:

1) SOCIAL JUSTICE: 

The interests of the many are served, not just those of the rich and powerful. To struggle against poverty and inequality and to show compassion. 

2) SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

This is a two-way responsibility which stresses society's responsibility to the individual as well as the individual's responsibility to society.

a) Society has responsibilities to the citizen to ensure that certain fundamental provisions are provided eg. National Minimum Wage, Healthcare provision based on need rather than ability to pay, High quality education for all, not the privileged few.

b) The citizen has responsibilities to his/her fellow citizens eg. show respect and tolerance to each other, not to pursue anti-social behaviour.

3) EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY:

We aim to create a society based on meritocracy, whereby citizens are able to meet their full potential based on their talents. They are not denied opportunity because of their race, creed, religion, social background.

4) SOLIDARITY & COMMUNITY:

We are committed to creating a social culture whereby citizens are aware of the importance of their mutual obligations.           

Perhaps our beliefs are best summed up by the following extract from our party constitution:

"The Labour Party is a democratic socialist party. It believes that by the strength of our common endeavour we achieve more than we achieve alone, so as to create for each of us the means to realise our true potential and for all of us a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many, not the few, where the rights we enjoy reflect the duties we owe, and where we live together, freely, and in a spirit of solidarity, tolerance and respect.”
