St Mary’s stained glass

The window shown above is in the south aisle of the church; it was given by John Walker in memory of his son Harry who was lost at sea in 1879.

The theme is ‘Hope’ and shows (from the left):

God’s covenant with Noah;

God helps Hagar;

God’s promise to Jacob at Bethel.

There are in total 15 stained glass windows in St Mary’s; seven were in place when the current church was consecrated in 1866 and a further eight were added in the following 18 years. Each window tells two stories: that shown in the glass and, in addition, that of the person who gave it or in whose memory it stands.
