How to look after your Hamster. Hamsters are one of the most popular small pets in Great Britain and are great first time pets. Male or Female? The sex is not important as hamsters like to live alone. if you want more than one hamster you must be prepared to buy two cages. Things you will need. Hamsters do not require a great deal of maintenance, but the few things it does need are essentials and you have to make sure they are provided. Hamster cage There are many designs to be found at pet shops. Make sure you buy one with an excercise wheel as your pet is a very active little creature. You will also need wood shavings for bedding, you can buy prepared hamster bedding form pet shops but avoid any bedding materials that might irritate or scratch their cheek pouches as hamsters like to move their bedding around themselves. Also do not use newspaper as it is toxic.Next you will need a food dish and water bottle. The water bottle should hang from the side of the cage so as not to wet the bedding. Your pet will love tubes to run through and hoard food in. This is also good exercise for your pet. Exercise balls are great for letting your pet have some time out of its cage. It will be happy to roll around on the floor without the risk of loosing your pet.Your pet should be supervised at all times when in the ball. Cleaning Cleaning your pets cage should be done once a week and should be washed once a month. The water bottle and food bowl will need to be washed out before feeding. Feeding It is best to give your hamster a dry mix food which you can get from Stonebridge City Farm or any pet shop. This food supplies the vitimans and minerals that your pet needs. Don't give your hamster too much fruit or vegatables. Once a week will be enough because hamsters don't overeat. Instead they hoard the food, and it tends to get moist and decay, this generates harmful bacteria. Health A clean dry cage is essential to a hamsters health . It doesn't like damp and will suffer from it. Please keep all baby hamsters safe. If you need any more help, please give us a ring on 0115 950 5113 or pop down to the farm. |
