CERRIG DUON, MAEN MAWR & STANDING STONE

Map 1
A delightful small circle with large standing stone, Maen Mawr just 10 feet outside. This site is our particular favourite since it was our introduction to stone circles. Unfortunately on our last visit, 09/04/00 it was noticed that some stones had been inserted into the circle. They were fairly obvious and seem to be an attempt to complete the circle. Please travel carefully along the lane past this site - it is quite narrow and has many blind spots! |
|
Although it is just a 100 yards
from the passing lane it is very well hidden from the road. Best to head
straight up
the lane, turn around at the biggest parking area and then return down
the lane. You will see Maen Mawr standing erect across to your right.
This is an awkward lane, best let the passenger do the viewing.
As you are travelling up the lane you may spot a large, isolated standing stone, up on the hillside to your right (see photos below). There is quite a stiff walk up to it. Although it looks like a large stone it is surprisingly slender. We believe that this is a direction marker. One way indicates the route to Cerrig Duon and the other direction leads to the two small circles near Trecastle. |
