Our Second Electric
bike
ALTERNATIVE
TRANSPORT?
This is an
electric bike of indeterminate pedigree and employing older technology than our Powabyke.
| It is powered
by a Yuasa sealed lead acid battery, 12V 24Ah. This is carried in the rear bag
and powers a motor mounted low on the front forks.
The history we were told was that this was one of only six made. They were made by a chap who repaired CNC lathes, so this may be the source of the motor. The motor resembles that of a car windscreen wiper motor but appears too big and heavy (could possibly be from a commercial vehicle). The motor drives the front wheel through a short chain. Power is controlled by ignition key, mounted on the carrier bag, just behind an below the saddle, and uses a handlebar mounted push button. The bike itself is a fairly standard 20" inch wheel, three speed Sturmey Archer hub gear folder. It has been fitted with excellent 12V front and rear lighting. Although relatively unsophisticated, this is not a machine for grannies or the faint hearted and pulls away at quite a pace! The range obviously depends on the terrain and how much you are prepared to pedal. A reasonably fit person would probably just use the power button for climbing hills. we were told to expect 12 mile range at 12 miles per hour and this would equate to our more powerful Powabyke which it is claimed will do 20 miles at 15 miles per hour (without pedalling). Unlike our Powabyke you don't need to pedal before the motor will start - just mount the bike and press the button for instant pull! Despite being only 2/3 of the power of the Powabyke, the three speed gears may help its staying power considerably. We have never seriously tested the bike but we would expect to be pleasantly surprised at the capabilities of this little machine. Although the Sturmey Archer hub seems to indicate a 1975 build date we understand that, and the condition reflects this, it has only been used a dozen times. |
