LETTERS FROM MALAYA

These letters were written by my mother to her parents and covered the years 1955 - 1957. They offer an insight into a very different world when Great Britain still held most of her Empire intact but was only just beginning to recover fully from the ravages of the Second World war and enjoy a more comfortable way of life. They are offered here as a piece of social history.
This site is dedicated to my parents' five children and all their grandchildren.

My father was a major in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), sent to Malaya with his young family as part of the British govenment's response to the armed revolt of the Malayan Communist Party. An emergency was declared which lasted from 1952 until 1960. The British encouraged merdeka (independence) through political means whilst instigating military counter-insurgency measures against the MCP which remain the only successful jungle campaign ever to be fought by a Western power.
