GNVQ INFORMATION FOR YEAR TEN

 COMMUNICATION MODULE

COMMUNCATION is very important.   We all need to be able to make people understand what we want:   to understand what other people are saying:   to be able to make ourselves understood.       How can we do this?

By using          facial expressions          body language         eye contact

letters         posters         telephoning       tone of voice         miming

E-mails         books          leaflets               stories       use of language

TELEPHONING
**********

This is an ever increasing way of communication.    Mobile phones are everywhere!!    You have to learn to have a good telephone manner so that the person on the other end of the phone has a good impression of you.   First impressions are very important, especially if you are telephoning someone to ask for something.

It is a good idea to write out a telephone script before you actually ring the person.

Basically you need to be polite:  if the other person on the other end of the phone is not, it would perhaps be better to hang up and try at some other time when the phone may be answered by a different person.

You need to give some basic information at the beginning of your conversation:   this is particulary important if you are leaving a message on an ansaphone.

  WHAT CAN I SAY
  *************

Good morning/afternoon/evening.

My name is ……………………..    and I am ringing from ……………………..

The reason I am phoning is to ask you if it is at all possible to ………………

You need to have listed all the things you need to ask - times: places: prices:  specific arrangements: address for the information to be sent to:  a name of the person you are talking to: a contact number: a suitable time: -etc:

End of call - thank you very much indeed for all your help.    You have been very helpful - thank you.

This is obviously a very simple example of what you can say.   Work on this will be done in the class situation.
