Mr
John Bratchie has been involved with
Tang Soo Do for over fifteen years. He cites Master Khan as his biggest
influence in TSD. "It was he who asked me to take over the running
of the club - it was good to think he trusted me to do that," says
John.
In reply to the question 'What motivates you to keep training week after
week?' John replies, "As an instructor, I've always got to keep
myself ahead of my students. I haven't got time for other interests
because I have to make sure I am prepared. I wouldn't ask anyone to do
what I cannot do myself. Not only that, but a great motivation is the
children at the club. I do it for them."
John feels the benefits he has gained from Tang Soo Do are improved
self-discipline, confidence and an inner strength that has helped him
through difficult times. In addition, he likes the friendly family
atmosphere generated in the club by members and their families. He is
also quick to acknowledge the loyalty of his students.
John still looks back on gaining his black belt as one of his greatest
achievements. "Getting my 3rd Dan was very satisfying too, but
above all I enjoy training with Master Khan because he is so
good."
A major disappointment is when students decide to give up, especially
those on the verge of gaining their black belt. "They have put so
much time and effort into getting so far - it's a real shame when that
happens."
As for the future, John has clear ideas. "Make Coventry World Tang
Soo Do one of the best clubs around - maybe with our own Dojang one day.
I don't know how much of a reality Mastership is, I'm not sure I can
find any more time. I do know that one day, when I retire, I will take
great pride in seeing my students running this club and taking top
honours." |
