PUB OF THE YEAR 2010

Congratulations to the Thanet CAMRA Pub of the Year 2010
The Churchill Tavern, Ramsgate

Situated on the Paragon, overlooking Ramsgate’s Royal Harbour, the Churchill was originally known as the Paragon Bars, being part of the hotel of the same name. It was renamed the Van Gogh, after the painter who lived nearby for a couple of months in 1776 and the downstairs function room was known as the Brittany Bar, which was a live music venue in the 1970’s. A further change in the 1980s saw the pub take on the name of Steptoe’s, describing itself as the “zaniest and wittiest pub in Ramsgate” with appropriate junk lining the walls.

Real ales were a feature even then with beers from the now defunct Canterbury Brewery available at the bar. It finally became the pub we know today in the early 1990s, the “Country Pub in Town” with its bare boards, agricultural tools and splendid selection of real ales – not forgetting the excellent restaurant. Live music still features strongly and Thanet CAMRA’s annual Cider Festival is held downstairs in the erstwhile Brittany Bar.

Churchill's is no stranger to CAMRA awards, previously being Thanet Pub of the Year in 2004 and runner up last year. This year’s runners up are also Ramsgate based, being the Artillery Arms and the Montefiore Arms, so congratulations to them, as well.

Churchill's now goes forward to the East Kent round of CAMRA’s National Pub of the Year competition.
