SCL has over 30,000 volumes in stock, covering a wide range of subjects with the exception of military topics which are held by the Prince Consort's Library, Aldershot. The stock reflects the training requirements of service personnel. It is especially strong in the fields of management, law, computing, engineering, education and sociology. A collection of classic fiction is also available. Titles not in stock may be borrowed through the national Inter-Library lending system.

How to request information or loans from SCL

  • Army personnel should always submit requests through their nearest Army Library or Army Education Centre
  • Royal Navy and Royal Air Force personnel should approach their nearest Navy/RAF Education Centre or may make an individual request if there is no appropriate centre nearby.
  • MOD civilians should follow the same route as for the relevant Service personnel.

Services available

  • Loans: Books are loaned from SCL for varying lengths of time. Items for an MOD authorised course will usually be available for the duration of the course, subject to periodic renewals.
  • Information enquiries: SCL holds a comprehensive collection of reference material which can be used to answer enquiries on a wide range of topics. Staff are always willing to give advice on any query.
  • Literature searches: SCL holds the major bibliographic sources covering English language publications worldwide. Literature searches can be undertaken.
