The Prince Consort's Library (PCL) is the military specialist library of the Army Library Service. It specialises in the provision of information on current military topics, political subjects and international relations in support of operations, intelligence, training and education in the Armed Forces.

  • CD-ROMS: A wide range of full-text newspapers, journals and reference works are available on CD-ROM for consultation in the library.

How to request information or loans from PCL

  • Army personnel should always submit requests through their nearest Army Library or Army Education Centre.. JOTES students may also approach the library individually.
  • Royal Navy and Royal Air Force personnel should approach their nearest Navy/RAF Education Centre or may make an individual request if there is no appropriate centre nearby.
  • MOD civilians should follow the same route as for the relevant Service personnel.

Urgent operational requests from any Service personnel may be submitted direct to PCL

Services available

  • Loans: Books are loaned from PCL for varying lengths of time.
  • Information enquiries: PCL holds a comprehensive collection of reference material, both printed and electronic sources, which can be used to answer enquiries on military and current affairs. Staff are always willing to give advice on any query.
  • Country briefing materials: Information packs on countries can be compiled from open sources. These are available to units on demand for operational needs and are tailored to meet their specific requirements.
  • Military Studies Library Service (MSLS): MSLS is a monthly current awareness bulletin on military and international affairs. The complete database is available for consultation in the library. (See MSLS information page for more details.)
