This was my first hard disk. I bought it for an old 386. Unfortunately, shortly after the warranty expired, it started developing bad clusters, and soon failed altogether. Also, after being left for a long period of time (2 weeks) without being used, the motor was inclined to seize up.

In the end I decided to open it up and have a look inside, and attempt to get the motor to unseize by rotating it manually. The photo below shows the position of the screw holes on the cover (8 off). Unfortunately, while opening it I missed the screw under the label (upper centre screw) and tried to pry the lid off with a screwdriver, and scratched the top disk surface! This obviously made the problems even worse.

The photo below shows the inside of the hard disk drive, including the scratch on the disk surface (bottom left):

The head assembly is moved by a voice-coil type system - the head assembly is moved by the current in the coil (top right).
When the head assembly is in the 'parked' position, the assembly is held in place by a magnet.
