Comments:

A sister ship to Tattershall Castle, Wingfield Castle was built and launched at the same time for use as Humber Ferries from Hull to New Holland. These were the first paddle steamers to be built on the North East Coast for many years and their construction was wecome during a period of general depression in the area. In addition to their ferry duties, the ship would make full day excursions to Grimsby at 11.00am on Sundays and evening cruises from 7.00pm to Reads Island or Immingham. Both ships had their funnels abaft or behind the paddle box, with the aft deck having capacity for 16 cars. 1200 passengers could be carried at full capacity, although this would be somewhat of a crush. For a picture of her passengers in 1962 whilst she is preparing to sail, please click here.On the main deck there were two saloons with a buffet on the lower deck. The last of the trio (with Lincoln Castle) to be withdrawn, Wingfield Castle was sold for static use in 1974. For a picture of her as she looks now, please click here.
