It's often surprising how a very simple repair can transform the workings of a car!
We did Land's End to John O'Groats in my scruffy-looking 1965 MK1 GT in October 1999. During the trip the remote gearchange became progressively more reluctant and less precise.
Being the sort of person I am, I stripped the 2000E gearbox, found nothing wrong, took it half-way across England to a specialist, (www.gearboxman.co.uk) who agreed there was nothing wrong with the box full of bits I showed him. Since it was stripped anyway, we put in some new bearings and blocker rings.
On rebuilding, it was little better. Then a chance conversation at the 2001 National resulted in me buying two "Gear Change Lever Bushes" at £1 the pair, Part Number 070-7K022, plus a Seat, Gear Change Lever Spring" Part Number 070-7A138 at £2. The gear change was transformed -- all for £3. See the diagram for where the bits go.

At least I can now say I've rebuilt a gearbox, and that my 2000E box is genuine!!
