This first 1881 Census reference caused a lot of confusion until the following Monumental Inscription was found

and then, with the other two 1881 census references, things got a little clearer.

In memory of Sarah Jane daughter of Joseph & M.A. HENSHALL who died at Prescott, Canada age 1y.9m. Also Joseph who died at Kingston, Canada age 2y also John Joseph who died at Winnington 30 Mar 1853 age 9m also Edward who died at Winnington 20 Mar 1858 age 1y.6m 'Resigned them not to Earth, But into God' Also of Alfred their son who died at Winnington age 2y, also of George their son who died at Winnington 25 Oct 1870 in the 21st year of his age, also of James Edward their son who was drowned in the River Weaver 26 Jun 1878 in his 15th year. Also M.A. HENSHALL who died 28 Jan 1886 age 62y, also the above named Joseph HENSHALL who died at Barnton 26 Aug 1887 in his 76th year 'Asleep in Jesus'

Next the Cheshire Free BMD was checked.

Now it seems that Alfd. C. B. ATTENSHALL was really Ada Smith C.B. HENSHALL

With this information the Birth Certificate of Ada was obtained.

 

Surprise, surprise, now, Ada Smith C.B. HENSHALL has become Ada Sarah Constance Beatrice HENSHALL

Born 04 May 1867 at Barnton, Cheshire, the daughter of Joseph HENSHALL, a Lock Tenter on a river, and Mary Ann McCOMMIE.

 

So now we know that M.A. HENSHALL named in the Monumental Inscription was born Mary Ann nee McCOMMIE and from the 1881 Census we know that she was born in Quebec, Canada.

No marriage has been found in the U.K. for these two so it is thought that they married in Quebec, Canada.

Perhaps Joseph was a British Soldier and Mary Ann McCommie was the daughter of a Military Man.

 

From the death of Sarah Jane in Prescott, Canada, the birth of Maria c1845 in Brockville, Canada,

and the death of Joseph in Kingston, Canada it looks as though they were travelling down the St Lawrence River.

 

The next reference is the death of John Joseph in Winnington, Cheshire, England.
