THESE TWO POEMS WERE WRITTEN FOR THE SOCIETY EISTEDDFOD IN 1970.
THE DAFFODIL
In soil that is ever alien, With love I planted thee, Facing west to Gwalia Wen You grew to please just me.
I waited long for thee to pierce The crusted ground so cold, Reaching for the sun above From winter bed, so bold.
From that moment, I guarded thee With joy and tender care, As up in stature thou didst grow, The fairest of the fair.
Thy trumpet, gleaming gold and bright Heralds the hope of spring That man, with man will live in peace; Not war, but ever sing.
Thou art the symbol of dreams fulfilled, Embracing all Cymric hearts, As on St David's Day we meet - What joy each soul imparts.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ THE DAFFODIL
I love the little flower It means so much to me; I'll wear it on St David's Day For all the world to see.
I'm proud to be a Welsh one For all my roots are there; The leek may be your emblem For me 'tis this flower fair.
Its beauty cannot be surpassed As it grows on hills and dales; Spring itself has come today As we think again of Wales.
Our hearts are all united On our very special day, We, one and all love Cymru And this is what we pray;
"May the love we have for the daffodil Grow and spread around the world, As it tells of hope and beauty That comes from its petals unfurled."
