Velo-city 2001 will takes is message to a far wider public than have been involved in previous conferences. At the core will still be an 'experts' conference, but an extensive programme of outreach work is also planned. Details are still to be confirmed but it is intended that the outreach work will have two major themes. A mass participation ride, Pedal for Scotland will involve cyclists from all over Scotland in a ride between the two host cities. Started in 1999, Pedal for Scotland attracted hundreds of cyclists to ride the 70 km route along dedicated cycle routes and quite roads. By 2001 this event will be a fixture in Scotland's cycling calendar and is expected to attract thousands of participants. Encouraging children to use bicycles to travel to school is the second major area of outreach work. Safer Routes to Schools initiatives are already underway in the majority of Scottish local authorities. Velo-city 2001 aims to bring major new sponsorship to this work and to provide an international stage to showcase the results.
