Introduction

The inaugural meeting of The Wales and Marches Horological Society was held at The Welsh Folk Museum (now renamed The Museum of Welsh Life), St Fagans, in January 1982.  The Society began as a section of  The Antiquarian Horological Society with which it still maintains strong links.  Members meet in an informal atmosphere to exchange ideas on horology, and they are invited to contribute to meetings in formal or informal talks.

Membership is diverse and includes people from a wide range of professions, including professional horologists and serious collectors.  Interests range from modern to early clocks and watches, turret clocks and barometers.

The Society holds three meetings each year (spring, summer and autumn), details of which appear on the Past Meetings page, with an optional field trip .  Meetings are an all-day event, usually with at least one guest speaker, and luncheon included.  Three different venues are used each year;  one of these is usually at The Museum of Welsh Life, St. Fagans.  Other venues include the Old Town Hall at Grosmont, The George Hotel in Chepstow, Belmont Abbey near Hereford and the Soudley Heritage Centre in the Forest of Dean.  Two future venues are Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery, Merthyr Tydfil and The Fox and Hounds, Llancarfan in the Vale of Glamorgan.  This spread of venues makes travelling possible for members that come from as far away as Cheltenham and Pembrokeshire.
