Progress Just over two years on since the start of the Project and the groundbreaking has begun. Overall funds now stand at about £39,600, which includes about £9,600 from the Millennium Awards and £8,000 from the "Give It A Go" awards scheme, specifically for a water feature. Plans The original architects plans were prepared in Autumn 2000. Have a look at them here. For the first phase of the garden, development is being restricted to extending the patio area around the Resource Centre, and cultivating an elevated border strip approximately 15 metres wide. Training in woodworking and metalworking techniques has begun using the facilities of the Four Winds Inspiration Centre and the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, the idea being to build rustic benches and a metal gate in an original design. Training in building drystone walls will begin soon. Horticulture training will probably have to wait until the dust settles. Events 27th August 2001: The contractors from MW Groundworks arrived to start work on the site, cutting away the privet hedge and some shrubbery before digging into the soil. The rocks arrived, on schedule. We had all been warned; "The whole place, built on rock it is. Just a couple of feet down". All it needed was a few hours with a jackhammer and a set of earplugs. Too close to the Centre for dynamite. 28th August 2001: Keith Wright, ex Hibs player, performed the symbolic groundbreaking with the silver shovel, in the presence of members of the project, Thistle Foundation staff, and representatives of the Greenbelt Trust; - Judith Bolton, Esperanza Martin, and Charlie Cumming. Winter 2001/02: Work starts on the drystone dyke. 31st July 2002: Opening Ceremony. The gardens are officially opened.
