Broadband is a service that allows significantly greater speeds of computer/Internet
communication to be achieved over your existing telephone service. It should appeal to any
business that has a presence on the Internet, even if only communicating by email.
|
It should also appeal to people that frequently utilise Internet services. Here are the main
benefits:
- Typically between 5 and 40 times faster download speeds (uploading is probably not much
faster than a dial-up service). This allows people to download larger files, such as music
and photographs, a great deal faster.
- You do not need a separate telephone line. Your normal telephone service can be used
while you are online with your computer. This is unlike a dial-up service, where the
telephone service will be engaged while someone is online, unless there is a dedicated
separate line, for which, additional charges are likely to apply
- You can be online for as long as you wish; 24-hours a day if you want.
- The cost of the service is decreasing, along with the cost of the initial connection and
broadband modem (many service providers typically offer these for free or at a reduced rate).
Service providers have made it a great deal easier for the consumer to connect up the modem
and load any software, although there is help on hand from BT and other service providers.
- With all the above benefits, you no longer have to worry about the amount of time spent
online browsing and downloading things. This opens up many benefits, for example, the
ability to download music or even entire films from dedicated sites. Such files could take
many hours to download, even at broadband speed, but it is possible to set the computer up
and leave it chugging over night or all day while you are at work. You can even configure
the computer to download several files with certain service provider's software. The
flexibility is far greater than that offered by a dial-up

what BT have to say
Broadband is provided via your existing telephone line, which is hosted by your
local telephone exchange. When the service becomes available on the local exchange,
there will be limitations, as the broadband service can only be provided up to a certain
distance from the exchange. Also, some telephone lines may be maintained in a
sub-standard condition, preventing the service to operate properly.
