Dimsie
Takes Charge
by Dorita F. Bruce
Fortune appeared to favour the conspirators. When the hated
first bell went, 'Jane's' automatically tumbled out of bed without
pausing to look at watches or clocks. Most people were half
dressed before they discovered the mistake, and then, though
naturally resentful - they did not suspect it of being anything
more than a mistake . . .
But it is April 1st, and Hilary Garth and her equally mischievous
cronies are determined to fool the whole school - and not just
once either . . . After ringing the rising bell half an hour
early, they cut off the water to the dormitory washbasins, bunged
up the spout of the breakfast tea urn, and finally, piece de
resistance, they tell each class that its lesson is to take
place in another classroom. The most magnificent mayhem results:
the school is full of confused figures jostling each other as
they scurry to and fro looking for their right classroom.
Alas for Hilary and her gang, into this maelstrom comes Dimsie
Maitland. A great practical joker herself in her younger days
at school, prefect Dimsie is not easily made a fool of now,
and certainly not an April one . . .
This tenth and final book to round off the DIMSIE series is
published to mark the centenary of Dorita Fairlie Bruce's birth.
It is a collection of all the 'Jane Willard' short stories,
mostly about the famous schoolgirl heroine Dimsie but a few
about senior girls at the school. Never before collected into
one volume, the book will delight a new generation of readers
who thrill to Dimsie's adventures as with all her fun and determination
she proceeds, tale by tale, up the school and into adult life.
