Himself and Macafferty's Queen
   by Kenneth Bird

Summer had been bliss. The sun shone every day as Timothy the tinker and Himself, his wonderful talking dog, roamed the lanes of Ireland in their caravan. But chilly autumn was too much for Patrick, their horse, and his rheumatism. Kind hearted Timothy could not bear to see Patrick's pitiful limp as he tried to pull the caravan. "I must find a job for the winter," said Timothy. "Somewhere with a barn where Patrick can sleep till Spring comes round again", and that was how Timothy and Himself came to cook and clean for the toothless old miser Rory Macafferty in gloomy Kilmanny Castle!

The old skinflint took them straight to the kitchen to start their labours. "He can't have washed up for years!" howled Himself when he saw all the dirty dishes that awaited them, but he soon discovered that leaving the dirty dishes was not the only peculiarity of their strange new employer. Why did the penniless old man keep the door to the west tower locked: what in the world did he keep there, and why was it such a secret? The mystery nearly drove Himself mad. However dangerous it was, and however much Timothy warned against it, Himself was recklessly determined to explore the secret of the west tower, and as soon as he possibly could!
