Jenny hurried on among the rocks. She felt afraid. The dark sky seemed to be pressing down on her between the hills, and the rain swept down the valley like a fog.

Suddenly she stopped and screamed in terror as a shape came blundering through the mist towards her. Then she recognised Peter, white faced and breathless.

"Jenny!" he gasped. "Oh, Jen! It is awful! We must hurry. The twins and that Percy. They have fallen down a hole in the mine inside the mountain and the pit is filling with water . . .
